Reign of Rice at Brookgreen Gardens

Reign of Rice kicks off for 2019 on January 19.  This lecture series will begin with speaker Corey Alston, an acclaimed sweetgrass basketmaker from Mt. Pleasant, speaking on the topic Gullah Sweetgrass Baskets from Past to Present.

The program continues on February 16 with Sophia Jackson, Public Historian from Georgetown speaking about the legacy of enslaved descendants of South Carolina’s rice heritage, and on March 16 with Sara Makeba Daise, Public Historian from Atlanta, Georgia speaking on the topic How Lowcountry Rice Landscapes & Culture Present an Afrofuturist Blueprint for Transformational World-Building.
