In Partnership with the Southern Weekend

This Bible might be one of the oldest documents in South Carolina

The Darlington County Historical Commission says it's the best Christmas gift they ever received.

The oldest document in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina is a bible that dates all the way back to 1645.

According to Brian Gandy, director at the Darlington County Historical Commission, it was given to the Historical Commission by the Dargan family back in the 80’s and during the month of December.  They say it was the best Christmas gift they ever received.

The Bible is written in Welsh and it chronicles the family from 1715 forward.  Years ago, people kept their family tree in their family bible.  A lot of information is given through that family tree.  They can also tell a lot about the book’s journey through written documents.  Come along with us and learn its history.
